With a long, hot summer hopefully on the cards, it makes sense to give your car a quick once over to keep things running smoothly – especially if you’re heading off on holiday. Even if you drive a Hyundai, one of the most reliable makes of car available, a little preparation could make all the difference
Check the oil. Your engine needs extra lubrication in the hot weather, so make sure you top up with the right grade for your car
Check the coolant level. Overheating is one of the biggest causes of summer breakdowns – most commonly due to low levels of coolant fluid. If you need to top up, use a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze (never add plain water to your system except for in an emergency)
Check the tyres. Worn tread can affect steering and braking performance so be sure to replace any worn tyres. Also check tyre pressure, as under inflation reduces tread life and increases fuel consumption – bad for the wallet, bad for the environment.
Check the front and rear wiper blades. A winter of frost, rain and road salt can affect the rubber and impair visibility – so replace any that look cracked or perished. Also top up your wiper fluid system and ensure the jets are working properly.
Check the battery fluid level. If its low, top up with distilled water (unless the battery is a maintenance free one) Also check the battery connections, ensuring they’re tight and free from any corrosion. Don’t forget that battery acid is highly corrosive to skin and paintwork.
Check the jack and wheel brace and make sure you’re confident about using them. If locking wheel nuts are fitted, ensure the locking key is stowed safely in the car
And finally, if you’re heading off on a long journey, make sure you have plenty of drinking water – and stop for a break every couple of hours to alleviate tired drivers and restless passengers
