Honest John – Ask the Expert – The dealer you can trust

I’ve recently retired and need to downsize from a 1992 VW Passat 1.6 TD estate. I would appreciate advice on what to buy with a budget of £10,000. I need a reliable, economical, five door hatch with chain-drive cam, roof bars to take a kayak and enough power to pull a small garden-type trailer from time to time.

The revamped Nissan Note makes sense with the belt-cam 1.5 Renault diesel engine, £35 VED and excellent satnav, but the best bargain at the moment is a Hyundai i30 1.4 ES (on the scrappage scheme for £8,295 since June 1) And you get a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty

NEW CAR AUTO TRADER

Road Test i20

Great to drive and keenly priced. Little wonder the new i20 has the competition worried

In any business it pays to know your customer, which is why Hyundai is now developing cars specifically for the European market. It realises that buyers here expect different things to those in Asia or the US. As a result, the new 'i' models get significant design input from Hyundaia's European development centre in Germany.

So it's no surprise that the i20 looks like a continental supermini. There's more than a hint of Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio to its dimensions, angles and detailing. It's lower, longer and wider than the Getz it replaces, plus the wheelbase is longer, all with the aim of improving ride quality and cabin space.

In fact, no rival in this test can match the 2,525mm between the i20's axles. As a result, rear legroom is up with the class leaders and passenger comfort is helped by the fact it has a smaller transmission tunnel than its rivals. The rear seats fold in a 60:40 split and with the bench in a place the 295-litre boot is the same size as a Ford Fiesta. The i20 scores well for kit, too. Unlike its competitors, you get electric windows front and rear, plus certain airbags as standard.

As with the exterior, Hyundai has made sure that the dashboard design is tailored to what supermini owners expect. The layout is straight forward and build quality is an improvement over the Getz.

The multifunction steering wheel adjusts for reach and rake, plus the driver's seat moves for height, while light controls make the i20 a breeze to drive. As with the i10 and i30, the build quality is impossible to fault while the plastics are first class.

Hyundai's chassis engineers have also done a fine job. The i20 turns into corners positively with ample grip. It can't match the Ford Fiesta's fun factor of refinement but it gets closer than any of the firms previous superminis.

What's more the 1.2 litre engine delivers very similar performance to the Fiesta. It has to be worked hard to extract maximum performance but while it's a little coarse at low revs, it's relatively refined higher in the range. It also has one of the lowest official CO2 outputs in the sector. Add this to the generous equipment, bargain list price and fantastic five year warranty and the new i20 is sure to worry established big sellers.

Chirpy Character

CITY SLICKER: The i10 packs in plenty for a small car with more passenger room than a Mini and more boot space than many of its rivals

Small is beautiful. That seems to be the mantra for Hyundai as they build cars with ever-shrinking fuel consumption and emissions.

To that end, the company have developed a new 1.2 litre petrol engine and the first model to benefit is the hugely popular i10 city car.

The 1.2 litre engine is actually more powerful than the car's old 1.1 litre, but offers identical fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The big benefit for drivers is that it makes the i10 a lot nippier, cutting its time for the benchmark 0-62mph dash by a whole three seconds to 12.8 seconds

As well as the new engine, the range topping style model gets leather trim for the steering wheel, gear lever skirt and handbrake, which gives a more upmarket feel to the cabin.

The updated i10 also now gets the option of an electronic stability programme. It already has a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating and the £345 ESP option will make it one of the safest cars in its class.

At first sight, I wasn't that impressed with the i10 It's not a particularly pretty car. The front grille makes for a sombre face and the interior is more Ikea than Harrods. Yet, somehow, it grows on you.

By the end of the week-long test, I was sorry to see this chirpy city car go. The seats are comfortable, even for taller occupants.

There is more passenger space than in a mini and a bigger boot than in most class rivals.

And your favourite tunes sound great through the six speakers.

The i10 isn't for boy racers, yet in town the car is surprisingly sprightly. It's actually a lot of carefree fun, helped by a slick five-speed gearbox that puts lots of other cars to shame.

On the open road, I wouldn't recommend trying to overtake anything unless there's plenty of empty tarmac ahead of you

Even so, the little Hyundai can hold its own on the motorway. The i10's biggest strength is value for money.

As well as a bargain basement price, it also has a five year unlimited mileage warranty and can return almost 56mpg

The i10 is well kitted out, too. The style model comes with air-con, electric windows, remote central locking an MP3 compatible CD player, alloy wheels, an electric sunroof and heated front seats

Hyundai's i10 won't win any beauty contests, but Alistair Coull says it will quickly win you over with its fun drive and long spec list.
